Black walnut is one of the world’s three precious trees. It has been popular in Europe as a furniture material from its rich texture since the Renaissance era, in which the popularity of this wood is monopolized, so-called “Walnut era” in the history of furniture, especially from the middle of the 17th century to the 18th century. Even today both popularity and the price are positioned at the highest rank. The core material is brown to purple brown and often has irregular dark and light stripes, and the sapwood part is narrow and yellowish brown. Wood grain is slightly rough, but it shows a beautiful luster. What is characteristic is facial expressions. The straight grain surface forms a dark and light striped pattern like a stack of ribbons, while the dark purple brown grain draws a varied pattern like a story about wind snow. One of the reasons why this material is loved relies on the beauty of aging which increases the astringent taste by wood components (tannin) in addition to the style that is produced by color, gloss and expression.
