After the use of formaldehyde and chlorpyrifos was regulated by the amendment to the Building Standards Law in July 2003, the "Building Material Testing Center" was established "Study Group on Standardization of VOC Emission Rate from Building Materials" consisting of experts and scholars, and industry associates , in order to enact the testing method and standard values for VOCs including toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene and styrene (hereinafter referred to as "4 VOC") according to "the standard value of VOC emission rate from building materials."
This is not based on legal regulations, but is a voluntary guideline formulated by the study group. In response to this, each industry group including the Japan Construction Materials and Housing Equipment Industry Association (hereinafter referred to as J-CHIF) has created a VOC voluntary labeling system for wooden building materials etc. and began operation.
Based on “the voluntary labelling on VOC emissions of decorative boards,” we are proceeding with obtaining certification of "4 VOC standard compliance" (registered trademark of Komori cooperation) for each product. Regarding certified products, we will display "4 VOC compliance conformity" on catalogs and homepages, etc. according to "Housing parts VOC display guidelines", so that we can choose products with less influence of indoor air pollution by VOC.
